March Break camp reaches out to “at risk” kids

By Susan Zuidema

Taking care of our neediest, most at-risk children is no small task, but is one that Jesus clearly commands his disciples to do.  Jesus said, “Let the little children come to Me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” (Matthew 19:14)

March Break camp pulls out all the stops to engage kids.

Jacob’s Well Ministries, Inc. is actively removing barriers that might hinder Brantford’s neediest children from experiencing the hope and love that is offered by a relationship with God.  Serving children referred by Family and Children’s Services, City of Brantford Housing, the Pregnancy Resource Centre, Nova Vita, and Victim’s Services, Jacob’s Well operates an annual Creation Force March Break Camp for children from kindergarten to grade 8.

The Creation Force March Break camp is offered in Jesus’ name and for His glory.  Each day, camp focuses on a different biblical lesson.  Day 1, children learn about “Who is God?”  On Day 2, they discover that “You’ve been Created.”  Day 3 they realize that “You have a Purpose.” On this day, they are presented with the gospel message and given an opportunity to respond.  Last year, as in every year, a sea of hands was raised to receive Jesus and to start the journey of exploring His purpose for their lives.  On Day 4, children learn that “You are Priceless.”  On the final day, the children take a trip to Toronto to visit an indoor carnival.

Admittedly, just running camp for these children is not enough.  Jacob’s Well Ministries is a para-church organization, working with churches to reach the community.

“We often get asked how discipleship and follow up happen with the kids who give their lives to Jesus. The only answer I can give them is that that has to happen in the weekly church services/programs of the local church,” says Linda Ellis, one of the camp directors and ministry leaders.

The continued discipleship of children who decide to follow Jesus at camp needs to happen in the local churches.  The only way for that to happen is for people from Brantford churches to get involved at camp in order to build relationships with children and/or parents; greeting parents at the door morning and evening or spending the week getting to know the kids that come.

This important outreach will be taking place during March break again this year in space rented from Evangel Church.  The needs to run such a camp are great.  Here’s how you can help.

VOLUNTEER: Over 100 volunteers are needed to operate the camp.  The kids and families who are ministered to at this local “mission trip” need a loving relationship with believers in local churches so they can continue to learn who Jesus is and how much He loves and cares for them. The camp runs a waiting list each year due to the ongoing need for more volunteers and the need to staff the camp at a 1 adult to 3 children ratio.

PRAY: Linda and her team covet the prayers of the church as they run this ministry each year.

GIVE: For more information on how you can support this important work financially or sponsor children with a life giving camp opportunity, please contact Jacob’s Well Ministries, Inc. directly.
